Monographic course on contemporary Qatar. Specific attention will be devoted to the political and social history, Al Jazeera satellite channel and the relationship between sport and politics.
Teaching is partially in Italian and partially in English.
The attending students will be asked to prepare and present a report, that will substitute the final exam
To enable students to acquire an ability to use this knowledge to interpret the socio-political evolution of Qatar, its role in the regional context and the determinants of the ruling family's strategy. To acquire an articulate knowledge of AlJazeera comunicative skill and the political use of international sport events (such as Fifa World Cup and Formula 1 Grand Prix)
Prerequisites
Some knowledge of International History and Middle Eastern History and Politics at undergraduate level
Teaching Methods
Face-to-face teaching. Powerpoint presentations. External speakers will be invited, both from Florence University and from other institutions.
The attending students are asked to present reports on selected topics
Further information
Attending students do not have to take a final examination; the assessment will be determined by the paper, the classroom presentation and their interaction during the course
Type of Assessment
Oral Exam. Students can give the exam in Italian or English.
Students should show: knowledge of the course topics and ability to organize and present this knowledge with the correct use of language and glossary specific of the field; the ability to critically analyze the issues which are relevant for the field.
