Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide a correct understanding of: a) The role of religion in the democratization processes in Eastern European countries; b) Historical and sociological rooting of Islam and of Orthodox communities in specific countries; c) Religion as a potential asset for a nationalistic renewal.

Course program
Some preliminary terminology issues. General aspects of religious freedom in Communist Eastern Europe. The Balkan issue in a religious prospective, with particular reference to the role of Orthodox Churches and of Islam. Case studies analysis regarding National affiliation and religion: a) Roman Catholicism and the Communist party: the Polish case; b) Orthodox Church and the Imperial idea: the Russian case; c) Orthodox Church and national myths: the Romanian case; d) Orthodox Church and politicalsubjection: the Bulgarian case; e) Orthodox Church, ethnical identity and nationalism: the Serbian case. Religious affiliation and conflict in ex Yugoslavia. Conclusions on the role of religion in the transition of Eastern Europe from Communism to Democracy.
